Milieudefensie wins historic climate case

Shell must reduce CO2 emissions

The court in The Hague has ruled that Shell must emit no less than 45% less CO2 in 2030 than in 2019. The case was brought by Milieudefensie and seventeen thousand co-plaintiffs. It is the first time worldwide that a large (oil) company has been held liable for climate change and has been ordered to reduce emissions.

In addition to the strict requirement to reduce CO2 emissions, it has been argued that Shell’s current policy is not concrete enough. It is not only about our own emissions, but also those of suppliers and customers.

The judge is of the opinion that Shell should contribute to reducing global warming. The company has formulated its sustainability goals, “but the policy is not yet concrete enough and is full of caveats,” the court said on Wednesday.

It is up to the company to decide how it reduces CO2 emissions. It is about net emissions. This means that Shell can also compensate emissions by, for example, planting trees at Rooted, although that would be a considerable number!
